Nigerian singer Seyi Shay has shared why she stopped going to her old church, and it all came down to the music.

In a post on Instagram, she said a church leader told the members to stop singing modern gospel songs and only sing hymns from the Bible.

Her reply? “I stopped going to that church. PERIODT.”

She explained that many old hymns were written by slave owners and forced on Africans during slavery.
“How can you feel blessed singing songs created in pain?” she wrote. “Do your research. Ignorance is not godly.”

Seyi Shay said not all hymns are bad, but people should be aware of the history and even create their own songs based on scripture.
